Police said the incident occurred around 4.30pm when Mohammad Mihal (22) and Hashim (28) were digging at the plot for the construction of a residential building’s basement. Both of them, who were from Bihar, lived in the Wazirabad area of Gurugram .
“The heap of soil flanked the excavated site and caved in on them while they were at work,” said Amit Kumar, SHO of the Sector 56 police station.
Other workers at the site managed to pull them out within 15 minutes. While Hashim died on the spot and Mihal succumbed to his injuries on the way to a nearby hospital, police said.
“We received information about the incident around 5.15pm, following which a team was formed and sent to the spot,” the SHO said.
The bodies of the two workers have been sent for autopsy and the report is awaited. The family members have been informed about their deaths, police said. The SHO added that police have not received a complaint so far.
“We have not received any complaint. So, no FIR has been filed. The contractor of the construction site is in touch with the family. As soon as we receive a complaint, we will register the case,” he said.
Asked about the safety regulations followed at the excavation site, Kumar said that’s being investigated.
Earlier in March, a 22-year-old worker had died after soil caved in on him while he was digging in the basement at an under-construction plot in Sector 84.
Six workers were installing a steel bar for a concrete slab to lay the foundation when a huge mound of soil caved in. Two workers got buried under it and one of them died.
The other workers immediately alerted their supervisor who, in turn, informed the fire department and police. A team from the fire department rushed to the spot and pulled out the two.
