BATHINDA: Less than three months after the people of Punjab showed immense love to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) by ensuring a historic victory for it in the assembly elections in February-March, the party is now facing anger from them, primarily over the killing of singer Sidhu Moose Wala.
It is being said that AAP MLAs and functionaries preferred to stay away from the cremation of the slain singer, fearing mounting anger among people, especially the younger generation, which is the mainstay of the party. The amped-up campaign over the killing of Moose Wala on social media and tempers running high among the youth at the singer’s native village Moosa in Mansa is learnt to have made intelligence agencies advise government functionaries against reaching the funeral venue.
People are now finding similarities between the absence of governing party representatives at Moose Wala’s cremation and that of the two protesters who were killed at Behbal Kalan after acts of sacrilege in Bargari in October 2015. At the time, the SAD-BJP government was the incumbent in Punjab.
People say the AAP government failed to appropriately handle the situation, especially when it came to curtailing the security of 424 protectees, including Moose Wala, and then making this fact public, which made them angry.
Moose Wala’s murder timing is being seen as the most inappropriate, as the state is observing the 38th anniversary of Operation Bluestar. It is learnt that agencies are perplexed over anger mounting so early after the formation of the AAP government. The setup is already working on ways to ensure the anger did not worsen.
