Ajit Singh Nagar police said they received a complaint from Childline district coordinator Arava Ramesh that a quack, Chavali Amrutha Rao, had put an infant for sale through a WhatsApp group.
Ramesh was alerted by Kamalakar Rao, a resident of Gunadala, who saw the WhatsApp forward. The group was created by Kamalakar Rao allegedly to keep in touch with his school friends.
The WhatsApp message read: “Female baby. 3 kgs. 3 lakhs. Birth certificate comes with our own surname”. The message was accompanied by a video and photos of the baby girl. The complainant, who noticed that the girl child was being sold, called the contact number provided in the message.
The person who answered the call introduced himself as Chavali Amrutha Rao, a resident of Ayodhya Nagar in Vijayawada. He said he was a registered medical practitioner (RMP). When the complainant asked Amrutha Rao about the forwarded message, the latter replied that a woman named Pushpalatha, also an RMP, had forwarded it.
During the investigation, it was found that Pushpalatha stayed in a house next to the infant’s parents. The infant’s mother during her pregnancy told Pushpalatha that she was worried that her husband may not accept the boy child again for the third time, as they were expecting a girl. After the delivery, Pushpalatha visited the hospital, took photos and videos of the baby, and sent it to Amrutha Rao saying a woman is ready to give away her child. The mother now says that all this was done without her consent.
