PUNE: A fresh case of promoting enmity and hurting religious sentiments was registered in the city on Tuesday night against BJP’s national spokesperson Nupur Sharma for her remarks on Prophet Muhammad during a television debate on May 27, after two cases each were filed in Mumbai and Thane, and another in Hyderabad.
Former corporator Haji Abdul Gafur Ahmed Pathan lodged a complaint against Sharma with the Kondhwa police on Tuesday night. “The matter is sub-judice. I shall follow the due process of law and fight the case in the court of law,” Sharma told TOI from Delhi during a brief telephonic conversation.
Deputy commissioner of police (Zone V) Namrata Patil told TOI, “Delegations of Muslim organisations here had threatened an agitation over the issue. We shall issue notices to Sharma and the television channel for recording their statements and take a call on further action based on the outcome of our probe.”
Pathan said, “Sharma’s remarks have caused hurt to our religious sentiments. The Prophet is the most cherished and revered symbol for the Muslim community. Sharma had not only hurt our feelings but created rift between different sections of the society. We cannot bear any insult to the Prophet.”
