MANGALURU: The domestic passenger footfall at Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) is witnessing an upward trend since August.
Last month, 98,887 domestic passengers flew from MIA as against 90,228 and 87,441 passengers in July and June, respectively. Meanwhile, international passenger movement has remained steady. A total of 51,054 international passenger footfalls were recorded in August, which is about 2,000 passengers lower than July.
The increase in international passenger footfall in July was due to annual holidays for schools in the Gulf countries.
“In the last two months, except for Bengaluru and Mumbai sectors, the response to rest of the sectors was dull. Some sectors had less than 70% load. Some of the flights which were launched recently were frequently cancelled due to no load or operated on alternative days,” said a source from the aviation industry.
“With the festive season kicking off with Ganesh Chaturthi, we are expecting the domestic air passenger graph to go high in the coming months and see all sector flights from MIA going full without any cancellation,” the source added.
According to an executive, the Manglauru-Delhi-direct flight with a 180-seat capacity is running with a load of an average of 100 to 120 passengers. The Mangaluru-Pune-Delhi flight service is temporarily halted and is likely to resume by this month end. The flight to Hubballi is also recording an insufficient passenger load.
A frequent flyer observed that the domestic passenger load would increase if some sectors saw a reduction in airfare. “There are days when Delhi-Mangaluru sector that has no competition, is offering tickets for Rs 30,000, which is certainly not fair,” the flyer said.
Meanwhile, IndiGo is planning to add an additional flight to Dubai as part of its winter schedule.
