JAMMU: In a setback to Jammu & Kashmir Apni Party (JKAP), its general secretary Vikram Malhotra resigned on Wednesday stating that the leadership has no coherent policy.
In his resignation letter sent to JKAP president Syed Altaf Bukhari, Malhotra said he is “convinced that Apni Party offers no promises to translate into reality at any point in time”.
“For over two years, we counted the ill and bad of other parties to convince people that we are the political party of the future. I am feeling deeply pained and dismayed to say that most of us are now tired of this. I am not able to figure out any coherent and workable policy and programme of the Apni Party,” Malhotra wrote.
Malhotra, who was the party’s face in Jammu, said JKAP “will take a very long time to be able to evolve as any sort of movement to represent people” and that would be possible only if there is a “coherent policy” to follow. It is very important to stay clear on the course of public service with clarity of head and heart, which appears not even a distant possibility in the party, Malhotra stated.
When contacted by TOI, Malhotra confirmed his resignation, adding that the party’s leadership policy was a “total mess” and JKAP has “regional bias” just like other Kashmir-based parties. He, however, refused to comment on his future plans.
Malhotra is the son of former legislative council chairman and veteran Congress leader Amrit Malhotra. In March 2020, Malhotra, then general secretary of J&K Congress, along with former minister and senior leader Manjit Singh, had left the party to join JKAP.
In April, JKAP’s women wing president Namrata Sharma quit the party claiming that the voice of the Jammu leadership was being stifled. In November 2021, former MLA Bishnah Kamal Arora quit JKAP to join BJP.
