BAREILLY: A Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) district president, who is an eyewitness in the Lakhimpur Kheri violence case, had a narrow escape on Tuesday night when he was allegedly attacked by two bike-borne assailants who tailed his SUV and fire at him near Gola town in Kheri district. His police security guard, granted to him on the apex court’s instructions, was on leave.
This is the third such attack on eyewitnesses in the case against Union minister Ajay Mishra Teni’s son, Ashish Mishra, whose convoy allegedly mowed down four farmers and a journalist on October 3 last year. Security officials were absent during all three attacks.
An FIR has been registered under section 307 (attempt to murder) of the IPC against “unidentified” persons at the Gola police station. A forensic team has arrived in Kheri to collect evidence as the ballistic report is important for the case. The farmer leader told TOI, “I was going home when two bikers attacked me. They first shot at one of the tyres of my car. They then tried to open the door. However, when they failed, they opened fire on me but I managed to escape. I couldn’t identify the attackers as it was too dark. They eventually fled. My security guard had gone to see his ill son but he came to the spot after hearing about the incident.”
He added: “I am an eyewitness in the Kheri violence case but I don’t have personal enmity against anyone. I have filed a complaint against unidentified persons and the police have registered a case. They have assured me that the accused will be arrested soon.”
SSP of Kheri Sanjeev Suman said that prima facie the attack on the farmer was “suspicious”. “However, we don’t want to say much until the investigation is complete,” he added.
SP of Kheri Sanjeev Suman said, “This incident is linked to a high-profile case so I immediately rushed to the spot and carried out an investigation of the crime scene along with some forensic experts. A forensic science laboratory team from Lucknow was called here on Wednesday. They will provide the ballistics report of the gunshot firing on Thursday. We are taking the support of technical experts and collecting all possible evidence such as CCTV footage.”
Asked about the missing security, SSP Suman said, “The right to give leave to a security official is with the SP of the district but the victim himself gave him a two-day leave. This is also a matter of investigation and we will take appropriate action.”
