NAVI MUMBAI: Khandeshwar police has arrested a 42-year-old truck driver hailing from Gujarat for lodging a false police complaint by cooking up a story that on May 10, he was robbed by two men on the Mumbai-Pune expressway, after the duo took lift from him near Panvel and threatening him with knives they decamped with his truck loaded with consignment of iron pipes for construction site.
Subhash Kokate, senior inspector of Khandeshwar informed that the complainant Umesh Kadam, a resident of Vapi, Gujarat, who is now the accused, had registered a FIR of robbery at Kanpurbawdi police station in Thane by claiming that two robbers posing as tourist guides had taken lift in his goods-laden truck near Panvel on the Mumbai-Pune expressway, while he was travelling from Pune towards Gujarat. The duo men requested Kadam to drop them. Kadam claimed that after reaching near Saket bridge in Thane, the two men threatened him with knives and decamped with his goods-laden truck.”
He said, ” As the crime started in the jurisdiction of Khandeshwar police station, the case was transferred here. We scanned several CCTV camera footages from Panvel till Thane, but the complainant Kadam’s truck was not spotted anywhere on the route. Hence, Kadam was suspected to have cooked up a robbery story, as the technical evidence had nailed his lies.”
Inspector Kokate said, “Kadam was detained for enquiry and when grilled, he confessed to have lodged a false police complaint and that he had sold the iron pipes consignment for his personal gains, as he was debt-ridden. We have recovered the tempo worth Rs 4.62 lakhs and also the sold iron pipes worth Rs 3.80 lakhs. After arresting the accused Kadam, we have invoked section 407 of the IPC for criminal breach of trust by a carrier.”
