KOCHI: Gokulam Kerala FC’s two-time I-League-winning head coach Vincenzo Alberto Annese confirmed his decision to leave the Kerala club on Wednesday after two seasons at the helm. The Italian tactician’s contract had run out on May 31.
Annese leaves Gokulam on a high after guiding the club to their second successive league title last month. During the run, Annese’s side broke the record for the longest unbeaten streak in the I-League and only tasted defeat once throughout the season.
The former Belize national team coach first signed for Gokulam in August 2020 and after winning the club’s maiden I-League title in his first season signed a one-year extension.
“We made a historical record of 21 unbeaten games and two consecutive I-League trophies. And to add [to that], we represented India in the AFC Cup,” Annese wrote on Instagram on Wednesday.
“I have seen many talented young players becoming professional footballers all over India. This gives them the opportunity to be included in the Indian national team. I am proud of this country, and I want to see India in modern football, football that is more advanced and able to compete and make history in every competition,” he said.
Annese also expressed his desire to continue working in India – but whether it will be in the I-League or Indian Super League is yet unknown. “I will always love Gokulam Kerala FC and it will always be in my heart. Now I look forward to new challenges and explore new opportunities which can be in India or in another country,” he said.
“I hope to continue to work in India and make the country proud. Each state of India is full of talent,” he said.
A former midfielder, 37-year-old Annese has coached teams like Bechem United in Ghana, Ahli Al-Khaleel in Palestine and PSIS Semarang in Indonesia.
