TIRUPATI: Kurnool range deputy inspector general of police (DIG) S Senthil Kumar stressed on the necessity to implement multi-pronged strategies to effectively curb the red sanders smuggling menace.
The DIG on Wednesday inspected the red sanders godowns and interacted with the anti-smuggling task force sleuths at Tirupati.
Speaking to reporters later, Kumar said various aspects, including shortage of staff, recruitment of fresh staff, coordination between the task force, police and the forest departments, etc were some of the key issues discussed during the meeting.
“In order to send across a strong message that repeated smuggling offences will be dealt with an iron hand, notorious smugglers who get back to smuggling activities despite being jailed, are being booked under the preventive detention (PD) Act. We have also stepped up vigil particularly at the state borders where red sanders consignments will not be able to cross the borders without the local support. Interstate cooperation with the police force of the neighbouring states has also improved which is a significant development when it comes to effectively curbing the smuggling activities,” the officer said.
Meanwhile, the task force sleuths who acted on a tip off, seized 80 red sanders logs worth approximately Rs.1 crore near the Vadamalpeta-Puttur highway late on Tuesday night. Six suspects were arrested by the police.
