MANGALURU: Minister V Sunil Kumar on Saturday lamented that successive governments since 1947 had not made much effort to include chapters on achievers such as Sri Narayana Guru in the school curriculum.
“B R Ambedkar, Shivaji, Narayana Guru, Rani Abbakka, Rani Kittur Chennamma, Basavanna and others made significant contribution for reformation in society,” Kumar, who holds the portfolio of Kannada and culture, said.
“If their history and ideologies were included in textbooks from 1947 itself, the young generation would have benefited. However, no effort was made to include chapters on these achievers after Independence. Successive governments have made efforts to suppress facts either by not introducing chapters on achievers in textbooks or limiting it to a few paragraphs,” he rued.
He was speaking at a state-level Narayana Guru Jayanti celebration organised by the Kannada and Culture department here on Saturday.
“Birth anniversary celebrations of achievers should be with the participation of a large number of people, instead of through just government departments. As MLAs, corporators of MCC and leaders of various organisations have participated, a state-level Sri Narayana Guru Jayanti on the reformer’s 168th birth anniversary has been organised,” he said.
The minister said Narayana Guru had spread his message without keeping any particular caste in his mind.
“Visionaries like Narayana Guru have advocated the philosophy of equality and emphasised the need for reformation,” the minister said.
“However, people have been trying to limit their ideologies to particular communities. Narayana Guru said that people should understand religion and disseminate the values to others. He advocated that religion should not be a subject for debate and winning. By understanding religion and spreading its message, people should become a part of reformation in society,” Kumar said.
MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, backward classes and social welfare minister Kota Shrinivas Poojari and several MLAs were present.
A procession was taken out in the city from Brahma Shri Narayana Guru Circle to TMA Pai Convention Centre.
Name station after Narayana Guru: Congress
The Dakshina Kannada District Congress Committee Backward Classes wing organised a Guru Sandesha Yatra as part of Sri Narayana Guru Jayanti from Mangaluru central railway station to Kudroli Sri Gokarnanatha Temple on Saturday.
Opposition leader in the Legislative Council BK Hariprasad said the station should be named after Narayana Guru.
