Uppalapati Venkata Krishnam Raju, better known as ‘Rebel Star’ Krishnam Raju, passed away on Sunday morning due to a cardiac arrest at the age of 83. He is survived by wife and three daughters. The actor who debuted in Tollywood in 1966 with the film Chilaka Gorinka passed away while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Gachibowli, Hyderabad. Born in Mogalturu in West Godavari in 1940, Krishnam Raju’s career saw him acting in more than 185 movies before taking up production and heading into politics. In 2000 he even moved a motion in Lok Sabha for the introduction of The Prohibition of Cow Slaughter Bill.

What many don’t know is that before his foray into films, the actor worked as a journalist and even received an award for photography, a hobby he cherished throughout his life. But when his debut film won the Nandi Award for Best Feature Film, there was no looking back for him after. He went on to act as the anti-hero, villain, supporting roles and even the lead, letting good stories define his career. Through the decades, he won Rashtrapati, Nandi and Filmfare South Awards for his roles. Heart-warmingly, his last foray on the silver screen was earlier this year with his nephew Prabhas for Radhe Shyam.

His last rites will take place in Hyderabad on Monday. Tollywood celebs and movie lovers were shocked by his passing, leaving condolence messages for the family on social media. Read their messages below:

Pawan Kalyan wrote in a press release:

Sri Krishnamraju is an actor who has a unique style of his own in the Telugu film industry. The news that Mr. Krishnam Raju, who was admired by all as an actor, producer and political leader, has breathed his last has caused a shock. Knowing that he was ill recently, I thought he would recover. I pray to God to let his soul rest in peace.

Sri Krishnamraju has a friendly relationship with our family. In 1978, my elder brother Sri Chiranjeevi acted along with Sri Krishnan Raju in the film ‘Mana Vuri Pandavulu’. With both being from Mogalthur village, they were very affectionate. Sri Krishnamraju’s performance in ‘Bhakta Kannappa’ is special. In it, the scenes showing devotion to Shiva are special. Films like Bobbili Brahmana, Amardeepam, Tandra Paparayudu, Mohammad Bin Tughlaq and Palnati Paurusham showed his style of acting. He was very sober in public life. He even served as a Union Minister. He was active in Prajarajyam and stood by the party in tough times.

The services rendered by him in the field of films and politics are unforgettable. On my behalf and on behalf of the Janasena, I offer my deepest condolences to the family of Shri Krishnam Raju.

Nandamuri Balakrishna released a press note that reads:

The death of Krishnam Raju, who was known for his goodness, has deeply shaken us. Krishnamraju has made an indelible mark in the fields of cinema and politics. Krishnamraju became a role model for many by earning a permanent place as a rebel star in the minds of the audience with his unique performance. Acting in two films with Krishnamraju was an unforgettable experience. Our family shared a good relationship with him. I went and met him when he was undergoing treatment (at a private hospital). I often inquired about his health. It is very unfortunate that he is not with us today. May his soul rest in peace, my deepest condolences to his family.
